Homely cooking that emphasizes on the freshness of the ingredients in a family-friendly environment is what Liang Kee Teo Chew Restaurant is about.
The Teochew steamed pomfret for example is classically Teochew – fresh silver pomfret steamed just right, in a clear broth that’s garnished with lots of coriander leaves and pickled vegetables and sour plum for the tangy zest. Other signature dishes include the oyster omelette and bitter gourd with deep-fried fish head. Another dish to note is the “sambal prawns” which sees succulent prawns and squid stir-fried with spicy sauce that has a dried shrimp base. The cold crab – simply steamed and chilled – is a tad over-rated though, as what makes it stand out is the quality selection of a good Sri Lankan crab with roe.
The restaurant is a favourite with families, and it’s also one of the least pretentious eateries along that part of the Singapore river which is turning into a hip foodie’s hangout.
